  • Twenty-nine individuals gathered at Nolands Catering Tuesday evening for the 2014 Relay for Life Kick-off Party. As Event Chair Modeste Ewing spoke about the upcoming event, something happened that has stuck in my mind since that evening. Nine-year old Landon West was sitting by my side and whispered a question into my ear. “How do you spell believe?” he asked. I wrote it down so he could see, and he then began doodling stars and writing ‘we believe’ within each star. It was in that moment I realized that if a nine-year old boy can believe there is a cure for something so much bigger than him, then everyone should believe and join the fight.
Relay for Life 2014 has been scheduled for June 14, 2014 and will be at Macon R-I.
Last year there were 10 teams, and the committee’s goal is to have 20 this year.
“Maybe you don’t have close friends or family who have cancer,” said Ewing. “You are lucky. In our small community, though, almost all of us have been touched in some way by cancer. We want you to join our fight this year.”
Speaking of fight, this years relay theme is “Finish the Fight, Find the Hero Inside.”
“That’s why we have these capes and masks,” said Ewing. “We wanted something that would grab peoples attention. As a committee, we want this to be the best event we can make it.”
