  • An Edina man was arrested after police allege he attempted to steal gas in a stolen vehicle and then drive off from police before crashing and fleeing into a cornfield south of Kirksville.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Cody L. Atkins, 24, Monday afternoon after receiving a report of a gas drive-off at a convenience store in Brashear.
According to the MSHP, officers located the suspect's vehicle and attempted to make contact before being led on a chase from Brashear to Kirksville and then south of Kirksville on Highway 63, where the suspect crashed and fled on foot.
Assisted by the Kirksville Police Department, Adair County Sheriff's Office and both canine and aerial units of the highway patrol, officers located the suspect hiding in a nearby cornfield with the aid of a heat camera in the helicopter after several hours.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
Atkins was arrested for resisting arrest by fleeing, probation and parole warrant for parole violation, tampering with a motor vehicle, theft, traffic charges and a municipal warrant for larceny.
Atkins was being held in the Adair County Jail on a 24-hour investigative hold Tuesday morning pending the filing of charges. He was being held without bond on the parole violation warrant.
