The Macon Chronicle-Herald, along with several local merchants, is sponsoring an essay contest for 7th and 8th grade students in Macon and Shelby Counties, for the 24th consecutive year, in an effort to make the students more aware of the dangerous problem of teenage drinking and driving.
Jacob Peukert, a Bevier C-4 8th grade student won first place last year. The plaque has been inscribed with his name, which joined past winners, Antonio Edward Adams Prokup,  Landon Monroe, Sara Duncan, Paige, Dimmitt, Alyssa, Peterson, Wesley Mallett, Carla Ashenfelter, Sarah Jackson, and Jessica Elam. The traveling trophy started with the 1993 winner. This year the first place prize will also include $175, with $125 and $75 going to the second and third place winners, respectively.
The aim of the contest is to work with younger teens in the hope that we can reach them long before the drinking and driving pattern can be firmly established in their lives.
Seventh and 8th grade students in Macon and Shelby Counties area asked to submit a typed essay of 300 words or less on “What Can Adults Do To Discourage Youth From Drinking and Driving.”
Poems will not be judged.
We  ask that specific names and friends, family etc, not be used. Entries are to be received by the C-H by Friday, Feb. 10, at 5 p.m.
You may send entries to Macon Chronicle-Herald, P.O. Box 7, Macon, Mo. 63552.
Other local sponsors of the contest include:
Northeast Coalition for Roadway Safety, Macon Electric Cooperative, Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home, Hutton and McElwain Funeral Home, Gilliland and McElwain Funeral Home, Super 8 Motel, Comfort Inn, Macon County Health Department, and The Winkie Law Firm, LLC.
