Bevier splits La Plata, Lady Cats take TCC lead

After taking 3rd place at the tourney in Keytesville, followed by three more wins after that, the Bevier Lady Cats faced off against the rival La Plata Lady Dogs, with the lead in the Tri-County on the line.
The Lady Cats had the momentum in the early going, as senior leader Dominica Prokup scored the first few points for the Lady Cats. Bevier would hold a double-  digit lead after a period of play.
The Lady Dogs would find their footing in the second period, as Makay Belt and others would hit some shots to pull La Plata back into it. Bevier would hold a five-point lead at the break, 25-20.
The Lady Dogs would keep things close in the third period, but the Lady Cats would get some more momentum and pull away in the fourth period for a big 47-37 win.
Dominica Prokup led the Lady Cats with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Valle Wilson followed with 17 points, three boards, two assists and two steals.
Tayler Hedworth had seven points, 14 boards, two assists and two steals. Beth Ashenfelter tallied three points, one rebound, two assists and three steals. Cheyenne Shelmadine added five rebounds and four steals.
Information for the Lady Dogs was not made available at press time.
The Lady Cats move to 13-6 overall and take control of the Tri-County Conference, moving to 6-0 overall.
The Lady Dogs drop to 15-4 overall (5-1 TCC).
After the 2012 seniors were recognized, the boys teams got to work.
The Wildcats would hang with the Bulldogs early on, but an injury to Bevier inside-main Jesse Ashenfelter would cost them dearly.
Bevier trailed La Plata by only five, 16-11, after the first period.
The Bulldogs would put the hammer down in the second period, as they started knocking down shots, both long and short-range, to outscore Bevier 19-6 and take a 35-17 halftime lead. It would be more of the same in the third period, as La Plata would drop 22 more points while holding Bevier to eight.
The Bulldogs would finish the job in the fourth period, outscoring the Wildcats 11-9 to secure a 68-34 win.
“Ashenfelter’s absence from the middle definitely changed the game,” Wildcat coach John Janssen said.
Brett Peukert led the Wildcats with 20 points and four rebounds.
McKenzey Pipes had four points, four boards and four assists. Aaron Peter scored three points.
Mike Kissee, in his first game as a Wildcat, scored five points and four rebounds. Jesse Ashenfelter scored two points before leaving.
Information for the Bulldogs was not made available at press time.
The Wildcats drop to 6-12 overall (2-4 TCC).
The Bulldogs move to 15-5 overall (6-0 TCC).
La Plata will travel up to Scotland County Thursday night, while Bevier travels to Green City Tuesday night.
