Linn County holds off Bevier twice for sweep

The Bevier Wildcat basketball teams hosted a doubleheader with the TCC-rival Linn County Mustangs Thursday night.
The Lady Mustangs won the tip-off and quickly took a lead with a shot and-one to go up 3-0.
Dominica Prokup and Christina Templeton answered for Bevier with back-to-back shots to put the Lady Cats ahead 4-3.
Linn County would outscore Bevier by three in the quarter to take a 13-10 lead.
Prokup hit a shot with 6:35 left in the half, getting Bevier within 13-12, but the Lady Mustangs answered with five straight to take an 18-12 lead.
The Lady Cats would stick with Linn County through the remainder of the half, but the Lady Mustangs took a 29-24 lead into the break.
The two teams traded shots for the first 3:00 of the third period, before Linn County scored six straight to go up 39-30.
The Lady Cats answered with a three from Sam Templeton, and a shot from Courtney Mattingley, to get within 39-35.
The Lady Mustangs would take a 44-37 lead into the final frame.
The Lady Cats tried to put together a run in the fourth quarter, but Linn County proved too much, taking a 59-50 victory.
Dominica Prokup led the Lady Cats with 15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Valle Wilson was right behind with 12 points, 13 rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Sam Templeton scored 7 points. Heather Hanson cashed in 6 points.
Christina Templeton scored 4 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Courtney Mattingley tallied 4 points and 6 rebounds.
Alex Fesler also added 2 points.
The Bevier Lady Cats fall to 3-15 on the season and 0-5 in the TCC.
The Wildcat and Mustang men were both slow to start, but Linn County held a 9-8 lead after the first period.
Jesse Shelmadine hit a shot at the beginning of the second period, giving Bevier a 10-9 lead. The Mustangs answered with eight straight to go on top 17-10.
Shelmadine answered with two more shots to get Bevier within 17-14. After two Linn free-throws, McKenzie Pipes hit a shot  to pull Bevier within 19-16.
With the Mustangs leading 24-19, and :42 to go, Shelmadine scored the next five points, including a buzzer-beating three to tie the game at 24-24 at halftime.
Linn buried a three right out of the gate in the third, but Shelmadine and Wade Teter answered with shots to put Bevier out in front 28-27.
After Andy McGhee hit a shot to pull Bevier within 32-30, the two teams would trade shots and free-throws the rest of the period.
Teter would hit a buzzer-beating three to get the Wildcats within 44-41 after three periods.
Shelmadine hit a free-throw, and Pipes hit a shot to tie the game at 44-44, with 6:22 to go, then Linn scored nine straight to go up 53-44 with 4:05 to go.
Bevier answered with eight in a row, including back-to-back threes from Shelmadine and a bucket from Dalton Livingston, cutting the lead to 53-52.
Linn responded with six in-a-row to go back up 59-52.
Bevier would get as close as 60-57, but the Mustangs hit their free-throws to take a 64-57 win.
Jesse Shelmadine led the Wildcat attack with an impressive 26 points. Wade Teter followed with 9 points.
Dru Kerns scored 8 points. McKenzie Pipes scored 6 points.
Dalton Livingston scored 4 points. Andy McGhee and Patrick Peukert each added 2 points.
The Wildcats drop to 9-9 overall and 4-1 in the TCC.
Bevier will host the La Plata Bulldogs Tuesday.
