Corporal Herbert A Compton

The late Herbert A Compton entered service in February of 1943 with the Ground Air Force 302nd Fighter Control Squadron.  He received his basic training in Florida and from there was stationed in Bradley Field, Connecticut, where he served as a military police.  While home on furlough he married his fiance Nadine Day on July 29, 1943.  A short time later that same year he as sent to Iwo Jima where he served as a non-commissioned duty officer serving over guards and security until he was discharged on January 4th, 1946.

In November, Herbert’s family made a donation to the Central Missouri Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in memory to Corporal Compton. A veteran who was unable to attend the trip due to finances, was allowed to take the Honor Flight thanks to the donation. Pictured is the veteran holding Corporal Compton’s photo. The veteran’s were proud to honor a veteran by posing with a veteran’s photo. It is like Corporal Compton was at the World War II monument in Washington D.C. in spirit.
