MACON - The Macon R-1 Board of Education met in the newly renovated board room Monday night. Brent Bernhardt, board member, was absent.
The filing dates for the April 6, board election is from Dec. 15, 2009 to Jan. 19, 2010. Qualified and interested applicants for the board may file for the designated vacancies in the superintendent’s office each business day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., beginning Tuesday, Dec. 15. The office will be closed for the Christmas holidays, beginning at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 23, until Monday, Dec. 28, 9 a.m. It will also be closed at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 30, until Monday, Jan. 4, 2010. Therefore, filing may take place Monday, Dec. 21, through Wednesday, Dec. 23, from 9 a.m. to noon and those same times on Monday, Dec. 28, through Wednesday, Dec. 30. Regular office hours and filing hours will resume on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, with filing to close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010. The office will also be closed on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, in observance of Martin Luther King Day. The board member’s terms of Byron Freeman and James Rehard expire.
The monthly MSBA video was played at the opening of the board meeting.
Superintendent Debbie Livingston reported to the school board members a preliminary report on the school from the state. She said in the preliminary report that the state evaluates the school’s performance and R-1 received a 14 out of 14. She said six of the 14 categories is based on student assessment and the remaining eight categories are ACT, advanced courses, career education courses, college placement, career education placement, graduation rate, attendance rate and sub group achievement. This is the third year in a row that the school has achieved this classification from the state.
Terry Russell, assistant superintendant, said all of the students should be in their classrooms by Monday following the Thanksgiving holiday. He said an open house is being planned for Dec. 17 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. That evening is also the first varsity home basketball game with Putnam County.
Each of the school’s administrator updated the board on the recent happenings and upcoming events.
Danny Orbin and Tammy Gibson were appointed to the committee for selecting a graduation speaker. High School Principal Dwight Tietsort asked for a few names by January. Macon R-1 senior graduation is scheduled for May 23, 2010.
The board approved the following:
•approved the evaluation report for co-curricular/extra-curricular activities/
•approved the report for library media services - elementary.
•approved the report for library media services - middle school/high school.
The board tabled the out-of-state trip permission forms. Supt. Livingston is to check and make sure there are no policy violations.
It was approved by the board for a bid by Walker Construction for snow removal and materials. The bid was for $50 to $60 an hour. The removal would be for the main campus and the Nut & Bolt Preschool parking lot.
The selection for the John T. Belcher Scholarship applicant was moved to the executive session and is not to be announced until the recipient is contacted.
Tietsort requested for the board to use the previous attendance policy due to so many being absent from the flu. He said at one time the school’s attendance was at 80 percent. The board approved the request for this school year only.
Livingston said Daniel Maguire was employed as night custodian for the Career Center Building during executive session.
The next school board meeting was scheduled for Monday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. in the board room.
