Flames and heavy, black smoke were seen coming form a power vent on the roof of China Garden’s in Macon Tuesday afternoon. Macon City Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at the Macon Plaza on East Briggs Drive at 3:24 p.m. The Macon Police Department were first to arrive at the scene and evacuated the restaurant as well as adjoining businesses. Firefighters also discovered flames in the restaurant’s kitchen below the power vent. The fire was quickly brought under control and contained to the cooking area of the kitchen and exhaust vent system for the cooking equipment. According to Macon City Fire Chief Leroy Noble, there was heavy smoke damage throughout the restaurant. Chief Noble said the fire is believed to have started from a pan of cooking oil that ignited on a stove. Two China Garden employees received burn injuries while attempting to extinguish the fire. Chief Noble said one employee was treated at Samaritan Hospital and released. The second employee refused treatment. The China Garden will remain closed for repairs, Chief Noble said. Other businesses located in the Macon Plaza were able to continue operation after being cleared of smoke. Assisting at the scene were the Macon Police Department, Macon County Ambulance and Macon Municipal Utilities.
