MACON – The Macon R-I Board of Education heard  a report on summer school and reviewed an operations update at their regular meeting on Thursday evening. President Allison Rowland presided over the meeting with all members present.
Joyce Wilson, summer school director, reported that the current enrollment for elementary/middle school summer school is 516, which is up slightly from last year’s enrollment. The students are in core curricular classes for math, language arts and science during the morning and in various enrichment classes during the afternoon. “We are off to a good start for summer school,” said Wilson. High School Principal Dwight Tietsort said that there are a few summer classes offered in the high school including Driver’s Education, Computer Technology and credit recovery classes. Physical education classes will begin next week.
Tietsort also reported that some of the test results are back for the End of Course (EOC) tests that were given this year to sophomores. The results from the multiple choice portion of the exams are favorable for the approximately 100 students that took the test. “Our percentages are looking good right now in Language Arts and Math,” said Tietsort. Results from the written portion of the test and for the science section have not been received.
Operations manager, Terry Russell presented a list of projects that are scheduled to be completed during the summer months. Upgrading of flooring with aluminum for the two remaining sections of the football bleachers will be completed using a donation by the Macon Booster Club. Landscaping will be done in the area of the high school and career center with donations from the student council. Other improvements include new surfacing for the 4th & 5th grade playground from P.T.O. donations, new flooring in several rooms, demolition of the house on Walnut Street recently purchased by the district and changes and upgrades in the heating, air-conditioning and telephone systems brought about by the new construction and renovation project.
Superintendent Debbie Livingston announced that the Missouri School Board Association Leadership Summit will be held June 12-13 in Columbia.
Athletic Director Pete Claas recommended that the school raise the price of activity passes. The amount currently charged for the passes has been in place for six years. Claas recommended that the cost of a student pass be raised from $40 to $50 and an adult pass from $90 to $100. “Few people take advantage of the activity passes,” said Claas. The passes can be used for admission fees to sporting events and the school musical. “The passes do offer a substantial savings for anyone that attends most of the sporting events throughout the year,” said Tietsort.
Livingston told members that the money for the school’s debt service reserve fund has been wired to UMB Bank to be held in escrow for the building/renovation project. Larry Hart of L.J. Hart Inc. has informed the district that money received from the lease certificates for the renovation project in the amount of $3,300,084. can be deposited in a local bank. The money will be in the bank for only a few months and the bank selected does not have to go through a bidding process. Upon Livingston’s recommendation, the board voted to deposit the lease certificate money in an existing cash management account with Macon-Atlanta State Bank.
Livingston also recommended that the board seek bids for banking services for the district’s operating account. The bids will be requested during the month of June.
The board approved the second reading of policy GBBDA which involves Family Medical Leave that has been mandated by state legislation.
In other business the board gave approval to evaluation reports for at-risk and before and after school child care programs, and vocational education curriculum and programs.
In executive session the board approved the hiring of Annavee Brown as secretary to the elementary principal, Tara Stutsman for middle school special education and Shawna Schofield as vocal music instructor.
The next regular meeting of the Macon R-I Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, June 29 in the middle school library beginning at 6:30 pm.
