A MoDOT employee was surprized with a warm welcome into Macon Tuesday afternoon after being in a Columbia hospital and Rusk Rehab since November.
MoDOT employees lined the highway in front of the district office holding numerous yellow balloons and signs letting him know he was missed.
Scott Miller, 43, of Atlanta, a maintenance supervisor in Atlanta for MoDOT, was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm and high blood pressure. On Nov. 20, he was admitted into Boone Hospital in Columbia, his wife, Brenda Miller said. “On Nov. 22, Scott had what doctors thought were 20 to 30 strokes.”
Scott was placed on a ventilator, feeding tubes, and drainage tubes. On Dec. 15, his colon ruptured and emergency surgery was needed.
On Tuesday, Scott walked out of Rusk with the aid of a walker. Brenda said hospital personnel lined the hallways and encouraged him with applause, smiles and kind words.
“We have gotten passes for Scott a few times,” Brenda said. “We have pulled in the driveway of our home, and he has seen our son’s ballgames, but Tuesday was the first time Scott entered the house. It was surreal.”
Scott spent six weeks in surgical intensive care unit at Boone Hospital. He was then moved to the fourth floor where they specialize in stroke patients for five more weeks. He was transferred to Rusk Rehab on Feb. 9.
“The first six weeks, I stayed with him because he wasn’t supposed to move,” Brenda said of her 43-year-old husband. “He wasn’t even supposed to scratch his nose. He would run fevers running as high as 100 to 105. When he arrived at Rusk he was whispering.”
About the couple’s experience, Brenda said, “Not everything was bad. We knew God had a reason for our situation. We knew God would take care of things. There were more blessings than bad.”
Rusk wanted Scott to remain until June 26, but the Miller’s insurance wasn’t for that.
“We were a little nervous coming home but we plan to take one day at a time, and keep working for Scott to get stronger,” Brenda said. “Scott has worked for MoDOT for 25 years and he luckily had time accumulated.”
“We know God has plans for our lives, and he will take care of things,” Brenda said.
The couple have three sons, Justin, 20, Cody, 19, and Travis, 16.
