In a split decision the Macon R-I Board of Education voted to proceed with a weighted system of grading for students at Macon High School and the Career and Technical Education Center at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Jim Rehard moved and Byron Freeman seconded that Macon engage in a weighted system of grading as recommended by High School Principal, Dwight Tietsort, a long time proponent of the weighted system. In the system, students who are enrolled in dual credit collage credit courses would receive a higher grade point for those classes. No set starting date for implementation of the new system has been determined.

Board members carefully considered both sides of the issue during a discussion prior to voting.

Voting in favor of the proposal were Brent Bernhardt, Freeman, Rehard and Rowland. Negative votes were cast by Gibson, Riekeberg and Danny Orbin.

The board voted favorably for the recommendation by Livingston to amend the 2009-10 school calendar to schedule June 1 as a full make-up day and June 2 as an early out day for last day of school.   Teachers will return to school on June 3 for a contracted work day. One full day and one early out day had to be made up due to school being closed on March 11 and 12 for the Macon Tigerettes’ games in the state basketball tournament.

The board approved the recommendation of Jeff Casady as the commencement speaker. Graduation will remain on May 23 as scheduled.

The board will meet on April 8 at 5 p.m. for a board reorganization meeting. The next regular meeting is scheduled for April 22 at 6 p.m. in the central office conference room.
