The Macon R-I Board of Education met for a reorganization meeting on Thursday evening in the central conference room.
Following the approval of the agenda, the old board was retired, sine die.
Incumbents Jim Rehard and Byron Freeman were given the oath of office by board secretary Debbie Baker. Both men were unopposed in last week’s election and will served three-year terms on the board.
Allison Rowland and Brent Bernhardt were elected board president and vice-president, respectively, by acclamation.
Superintendent Debbie Livingston summarized her visit to Jefferson City on Wednesday. Livingston traveled with other superintendents to speak with state legislators on the projected upcoming funding cuts. “As it now stands, it looks like Macon R-I will have approximately $117,000 withheld from the June payment from the state,” said Livingston.
There was no executive session.
Livingston announced decisions that were made by the board in executive session following the March 23 regular board meeting.
According to Livingston, the board has taken action to decrease the number of certified staff in the elementary building by two. “With the cut in funding for the Parents as Teachers (PAT) program a certified person in that program will be re-assigned in the elementary building,” said Livingston. “The other elementary position was cut based on the anticipated decline in student enrollment in the elementary school next year.”
Other board action included the cutting of the assistant band instructor, a position that had already been reduced this year to three hours per day for band and the other hours of the day filled in another area. The gifted program will change to part time for the next school year.
“I feel that changes made at this time for Macon R-I are minimal when compared to decisions being made by other districts,” said Livingston. “The board and and administrators are cognizant of the impact the state’s financial condition can have on all school employees and will do the very best we can in making future decisions for this district.”
The next regular meeting of the Macon R-I Board of Education is scheduled for Thursday, April 22 at 6 p.m. in the central conference room.
