Council approves purchase of storm sirens

MACON - The Macon City Council approved to purchase storm sirens at the cost of $47,038.29 from Blue Valley Public Safety during its regular meeting Tuesday night.
The council approved to allow the tractor parade and purchase extra insurance for approximately $590 if the parade is going to be held. Vicky McLeland said they strongly recommended for the group holding the parade to purchase insurance also. The city’s insurance would just cover the city’s liability not the drivers of the tractors.
The council approved to amend  an ordinance to allow the location of a tattoo parlor to open at the corner of  Vine Street and Highway 63. The Pony Express was the last business to be in the building at that location. The council also approved to rezone 105 South Rubey from an R-3 residential to B-1 Business. R.A.I.L (Rural Advocate for Independent Living). Teresa Myers, manager of R.A.I.L. told the council that they intend to purchase the former Rubey Street Baptist Church building. They would like to expand 12 feet into the parking area for additional space.
The council approved to display old playground equipment in the Historical Society Museum. The equipment which consists of horses will be loaned to the museum.
Stephanie Wilson, Macon Municipal Utilities general manager, asked the council to approve a resolution to recall bonds at a lower interest rate. She also stated that new street lights had been installed between Prenger’s and Macon Electric Coop on Briggs Drive. She said a public meeting will be at the Macon Expo Center on July 15 at 5:30 p.m. She said Aug. 4 ballot issues are to be discussed. A representative from the Macon Economic Development and Macon County Commissioners will be available to explain the landfill tipping fee, and the Macon Utilities will be available for questions on the city’s sewer improvements.
The next council meeting was scheduled for July 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers. The council did not hold an executive session.
