The first staff development day is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 3. Livingston said that Macon R-I will be a training facility that day for active shooter training. The training will consist of classes in the morning and active shooter simulation in the afternoon. Approximately 75 Macon R-I teachers and administrators will be involved in the exercise. Local law enforcement will be invited to participate. The training is being offered through SEMA. Staff not involved with the training will take part in other building level professional development activities.
Superintendent Livingston asked each building administrator to comment on recent MAP Assessment results.
Elementary principal Ernest Motley said that it is his goal to be at state level or higher in the areas tested on the MAP tests. "We are at state level in two out of three areas," he said. "We are still not seeing the growth in math that we want to see."
Dustin Fanning, Middle School Principal said that the middle school is working to examine the MAP data to make sure that the curriculum is where it needs to be. "We are showing steady progress overall in math," he said. "We are not where we need to be, we've got some work to do, but we are using this as an opportunity to work for improvement."
High School Principal Dwight Tietsort said that some of the End of Course high school test results were very good. The high school is above state average in five of eight areas tested. "We went down in two areas and that is a concern to me," said Tietsort. "We will focus on our weaker areas at the teacher in-service on Friday to address where we need to improve."
Tietsort said that 73 students took the ACT test last year, the highest number ever recorded for the school. "We showed overall improvement of scores from last year," said Tietsort. "We were pleased with the scores and hope they continue to go up next year." The average ACT score for Macon R-I students was 21.3. The state average for the test is 21.6, while the national average is 21.0
