The La Plata Soybean Festival was held over Labor Day Weekend. This festival has been held Labor Day weekend for more than sixty years.
According to Sally Moore, one of the festival coordinators, weather is always an issue. This year was no exception. Numbers were down, but "for the weather, it's not been bad," said Moore.
The festival included some well-honed events such as a 5K run, Little Mr. and Miss La Plata, Queen Soya contest, church in the park, truck/tractor pull and biscuits and gravy in the park.
There were even several activites added to the festival this year. A Jr. Princess contest was held for girls ages 7-10; a Princess contest was held for girls ages 10-14; a toddler for ages 25-47 months; a kiddie parade on Labor Day and a fishing derby.
According to coordinators, two of the biggest events of the festival include the parade and the Chicken Q. The Chicken Q is a meal including a half BBQ chicken, beans, coleslaw and drink and is a fundraiser for the festival.
