  • More than 200 students gathered at the Macon County Fairgrounds Park on April 25 to learn about the environment.
Fourth grade classes and a few third grade students from Macon R-1 Elementary, Macon Immaculate Conception, Macon Tri-County Christian School, Callao Elementary, Bucklin R-II, Marceline Elementary and Marceline Father McCartan Memorial School attended the 2013 Earth Day Event.
Students visited 12 different stations sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Missouri Department of Conservation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
At the Earth Tunnel Station, students could crawl through a box that simulated a tunnel.
An Environmental Specialist with the DNR told the students to pay attention to both sides of the tunnel when crawling through it.
In the tunnel the children were able to see the effects of substances like oil, gas or chemicals had on the ground and on things living in the ground.
At the Recycling Relay Station, the students learned that each person produces 4 1/2 pounds of trash per day and that 3 1/2 pounds usually goes into a landfill.
Other DNR stations included: Mr. Spill, Watershed, Making Safe Drinking Water, State Parks, Asbestos Station, Macro-Invertebrates and EER Emergency Response.
The Missouri Department of Conservation sponsored a station on Trees/Arbor Day and a station on wildlife.
