The Macon Fire Department was dispatched to smoke at the Macon County Sheriff's Office on Friday, April 19 at 10:28 p.m.
The fire department arrived on scene at 10:31 p.m. to find light smoke and fire extinguisher powder in the cell area on the first floor. Fire department personnel found that there had been a fire in an air vent between the cell blocks. Approximately two and a half gallons of water was applied to paper products in the vent to make sure the fire was out. The second floor was checked for any extension of fire and smoke, but none was found. The structure was ventilated with two air conditioning units in the north wall of the jail. An investigator with the Missouri Division of Fire Safety arrived on the scene shortly after the fire department and the investigation was then turned over to him.
The fire department was assisted by members of the Macon Police Department, the Macon County Sheriff's Office and the Missouri Division of Fire Safety.
No further actions were taken and the fire department was clear of the scene and in quarters at 11:10 p.m.
