If you have seen Fower Memorial Airport lately, you may have noticed something missing—the runway. That's right, the old runway has been completely dug up. But the runway is just one part of the Fower Memorial Airport Project.
The Fower Memorial Airport Project is a $3 million project that started on April 1, and should be finished mid-August if weather permits.
"The construction was going well," said City Administrator Allan Muncy. "They were in the process of removing all of the base underneath the runway so they could put in a new base, but the weather has slowed it down."
The old asphalt runway was 60 feet wide and 3,300 feet long. The new concrete runway will be 75 feet wide and 4,200 feet long.
In addition to the runway, the project will include new taxiways and turnarounds, the installation of medium intensity runway and taxiway threshold lights, runway identification lights, precision approach path indicators and much more.
