  • What does a pinwheel symbolize? For Community Child Development Center Director Tricia Knowles and many others, it symbolizes childhood.
"The whole idea of the pinwheel is to remind people of their childhood," said Knowles. "And that childhood should be happy go lucky and that for a lot of children it is not."
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and the Community Child Development Center in Macon was recognized by Missouri Prevention Partners for their exemplary leadership in accepting the responsibility of child abuse prevention and taking steps to protect children in their communities. To help raise awareness, the Community Child Development Center delivered flowerpots of pinwheels to about 15 local businesses and organizations.
The Community Child Development Center was selected as one of 28 agencies in the state to attend a Community Pinwheel Garden Ceremony at the State Capitol on April 17. Attendees were going to decorate the Capitol lawn with pinwheels, however, due to weather the event was canceled.
In addition to the pinwheels, a grant received from the Children's Trust Fund allows for the Community Child Development Center to provide education to parents.
"The idea is that through parent education, abuse and neglect is less likely to happen," said Knowles. "There is actually research that shows that any kind of adverse childhood experience really impacts the child's ability to develop, grow and learn later in life."
To help support the Community Child Development Center in its efforts to end child abuse, they are asking that you wear blue on Friday, April 19.
"We just want to bring awareness to child abuse and neglect," said Knowles
