The long process to adopt the 2013-14 Master Calendar for the Macon R-I School District ended at Thursday night's regular meeting. The board chose version 3.1 of the calendar in which school begins on Wednesday, August 21 and ends on Friday, May 16, 2014.
Director of Operations Marshal Gingrich presented the bids received for the summer 2013 capital improvements. The board accepted the bids totaling $154,409.85 for the projects. The capital improvements budget is $200,000.
Bids were accepted for: Middle school roof, $35,699 from Missouri Builders; Elementary kitchen remodel, $17,500 from Schwada Builders; Elementary school plumbing/sewer pipe/concrete, $48,090 from Willis Brothers Inc.; Elementary school removal of asbestos tile/installation of new tile, $35,870.85 from Bright Floors; Elementary gym new entrance/storage & loft/install overhead door, $17,250 from Schwada Builders.
Gingrich estimates an additional $35,000 to be spent on new equipment including a new dishwasher, range hoods and fans in the elementary kitchen.
Gingrich also reported that work on the new secured entrances to the elementary school, high school and career center is expected to be completed next week. Cameras, two-way communicators and television screens are being installed.
In his report Superintendent Dr. Chuck Stockton told the board that he received word that health insurance for the district will be increasing 12 percent next year. Stockton said he feels that the increase is in direct response to the Affordable Care Act and that he expects premiums to continue to rise.
The board has selected Kate Decker Blaise Clark as commencement speaker. Decker is a 1994 graduate of Macon High School. She currently lives in Ashland. Retired principal Dwight Tietsort will be speaking at baccalaureate.
Career center director Pete Claas updated the board on a proposal to offer agriculture communications as a dual credit course in co-operation with Missouri State University. The class would be taught by Jarod Womack and feature similar components of the English IV course. To date, 16 students have expressed an interest to enroll in the course which will also be producing the FFA website and newsletter.
In other action the board approved the 2013 lease with the Macon Baseball Association and an agreement with Tri-County Christian School for their students to participate in MHSAA activities at Macon R-I.
An executive session was requested. Results of the session were not available by press time and will be reported next week.
The board set a board re-organizational meeting for Tuesday, April 16, at 6 p.m. in the central conference room with the two new members who will be elected in the April 2 election. A board training session may be included following the reorganization.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 18 at 6 p.m. in the conference room.
