  • Carl Benjamin “Ben” Barrows
    Carl Benjamin “Ben” Barrows, 93, passed away February 10, 2013, at his home at Loch Haven Nursing Home in Macon, MO.  Ben was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Browning, MO, to Benjamin and Nellie Barrows.  After graduating from Purdin High School, he worked at the Purdin Mercantile until 1942, when he joined the United States Coast Guard.  During WWII, he served aboard the USS Dickman, seeing action in 5 theatres of war.  Shortly before Ben completed his military service, his sweetheart, Lorene Stone, joined him on the east coast and they were united in marriage in Rumson, NJ.  They celebrated 67 years of marriage before Lorene passed away in March of 2012.
    In 1946, Ben and Lorene moved to Monroe City, MO, where he managed the third store in what would become the Westlake Hardware Company.  They moved to Macon in 1963 where Ben managed the Westlake store until he retired in 1990.  He served on the Westlake Board of Directors for several years, as well as on the board of the Macon Building and Loan.  Ben was active in the Macon Lions Club and was recognized for his 65-year membership in the service club.  He belonged to the First Baptist Church of Macon.  
    Ben is survived by: 2 sons, James (Sarah) of Kansas City, Larry (Donna) of North Kansas City; 3 grandsons, Matthew (Katie) of Denver, CO, Ryan (Alicia) of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Anthony of North Kansas City; great-grandson, Liam of Lee’s Summit; brother, Burl Barrows of Shawnee, KS.
    Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, February 13, 2013, at the Hutton & McElwain Funeral Home in Macon with visitation a hour before the service.
     Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Macon.  Memorials to the American Cancer Society or the Macon Lions Club c/o Brian Winter 1006 Lawndale Drive, Macon, MO 63552.  The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Loch Haven for the care and love shown to Ben and Lorene while they were residents.
