Tuesday evening, Macon County Relay for Life held its annual kick-off event. There were survivors, caregivers, community leaders and volunteers who attended, but all were there for the same cause—to find a cure.
The event started out with a meal donated by Nolands catering and then the survivors present were introduced. Eleven-year participant and Publicity Chair, Modeste Ewing, introduced all of the present cancer survivors mentioning, "you are the reason we all relay."
Then Debbie Wiggans, who was selected as this years Hero of Hope for the Eastern Missouri region, shared her story that brought tears to my eyes. "Because of every relay person in this room and millions of others, I am standing here today," said Wiggans. "I'm just a person who fought the battle like a million other cancer survivors. God left me on this earth because he wanted me to do something, so my challenge is to spread the word."
Last years relay raised close to $23,000 putting Macon County in the $15,000 club for 2012.
Relay for Life will be on June 8 from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Macon R-I School.
