  • Last year, the U.S. Postal Service introduced the Village Post Office (VPO), which acts as an alternate retail location for postal products. And on Friday, January 25, the Bank of New Cambria will open one.
"We think it is a good opportunity to service the community," said Bank of New Cambria Branch Manager Melinda Master.
The idea for the VPO came about after the Bevier Post Office announced it will be shortening its hours. According to the Bevier Post Office Officer In Charge, Sheri Tate, creating these VPO's is called a Post Plan which is happening to a lot of smaller post offices.
"It's a way of cutting costs and saving money," said Tate.
The Bevier Post Office will now only be open from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The VPO will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays. The VPO will sell the basics—45 cent stamps and flat rate boxes.
"Anything done in our office will also benefit the sales of the Bevier Post Office, so it isn't taking away from them if you stop here," said Master. "We will work together and make it beneficial for our community so we can keep the post office."
"I hope it works," said Tate. "It may take awhile for people to know they can buy stamps at a bank, but I think it will be utilized once people know it is there."
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Friday, January 25, at 11 a.m. at the Bank of New Cambria the Bevier Branch.
