    News to Know
A gunman opened fire at Taft High School in California this morning, Yahoo News reports. The suspected shooter was a 16-year-old male student at the school and has been taken into custody. The alleged shooter was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun when he walked into a classroom after the start of first period and shot a student. He then called out another student's name and fired another shot which missed. A teacher and campus supervisor then convinced him to put the gun down. He was then apprehended by police.
The victim, also 16, was shot in the upper-right chest and was airlifted to a hospital. He is reportedly in critical, but stable condition. A teacher suffered a pellet wound to the head and was treated at the scene, while another student close to the gun when it fired was taken to the hospital to be treated for hearing loss.
Students were evacuated and authorities did a room-by-room search of the school. One student reported paarticipating in an "active shooter drill" in another building on the school's campus when the actual shooting occurred.
    Quote of note
"They're telling us that could result in death - not just the release of secret information, but death. Is that not something we should defer to?" - Judge Merrick Garland, District of Columbia U.S. Court of Appeals, on the release of pictures of Osama bin Laden's body. Conservative law group Judicial Watch is appealing an April 2012 decision that photos would not be released. The decision was partly based on sworn affidavits from government officials that the photos or videos contained information that could endanger national security.
