The Kirksville Police Department is investigating an apparent murder from Sunday night and has a person of interest in custody after being called to a report of a vehicle engulfed in fire near the Village 76 apartments in Kirksville.
Shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday, KPD and the Kirksville Fire Department responded to the 100 block of Valley Forge Drive to a report of a vehicle fully engulfed in fire. While responding, police also identified a disturbance at a nearby apartment and located a second fire and a deceased Caucasian male, according to the press release.
Police took Paul R. Potter, 49, of Kirksville, into custody at the scene on suspicion of first-degree murder with a weapon and suspicion of first-degree arson, according to the Kirksville Police blotter.
No further suspects were being sought as of Monday morning.
Adair County Coroner Brian Noe declined Monday to identify the victim or a cause of death, citing pending notifications of next of kin and a scheduled autopsy.
The investigation is ongoing with charges likely in connection with the case by Monday afternoon.
KPD declined further comment on either of the two fires or Potter’s relationship to the investigation.
As of Monday morning, Potter was being held in the Adair County Jail on a 24-hour hold.
