The Atlanta Lady Hornets had a rough season in 2011-12, but this is a new year, so anything can happen.
The Lady Hornets and Hornet men played host to the Canton Tigers Tuesday night to open the 2012-13 season.
The Lady Tigers grabbed an early lead on Atlanta, going ahead 11-5 after a period of play, but the Lady Hornets fought back in the second quarter, tying the game at 22 at half.
Canton would hold the lead once more after the third period, 40-37, but the Lady Hornets would explode from there, outscoring Canton 25-17 to take a 62-57 victory.
Sam Reed had a huge night for the Lady Hornets, dropping a whopping 32 points on Canton. Ashton Ross followed with seven points.
Shalyla Collier and Sheyenne Klamert each scored five points. Katy Baker and Demetri Thomas each cashed in four points.
Abbie Parton and Maddie Cuppy each tallied two points, and Taylor Howlett added one point.
The Lady Hornets start the season at 1-0.
The Hornet men would have a tougher time with Canton. The Tigers would hold a 20-14 lead after the first period.
Canton would outscore Atlanta 13-12 in the second quarter to take a 33-26 halftime lead.
The Tigers would blow the game open from there, as they dropped 23 points in the third period, then 21 in the fourth, leading to a 77-58 win over Atlanta.
Dylan Hruska led the Hornets with 16 points. Tagan Brookhart followed with 14 points.
Collan Thrasher scored 12 points. Lance Weber cashed in 11 points.
Vincent Elrod tallied three points, and Korbin Gunnels added two points.
The Hornets begin the season with a 0-1 mark.
Atlanta participates in the Novinger Tournament next week.
