The long wait was over Tuesday night, as the Macon Tigers and Tigerettes basketball teams tipped off their season against an unfamiliar foe: the Harrisburg Bulldogs.
The Tigerettes, coming off a rocky 2011-12 season, started a little shaky, as the Lady Bulldogs grabbed an 11-8 lead following the first quarter.
Harrisburg's lead grew in the second quarter, as they outscored Macon 9-6 to take a 20-14 halftime lead.
The Tigerettes would wake up in the second half, as they outscored the Lady Bulldogs 15-9 to tie the game at 29-29 heading to the final frame.
Macon would keep up the momentum in the fourth quarter, cashing in 21 points, holding Harrisburg to 11, for the 50-40 victory.
Valerie Schmidt led the Tigerettes with 14 points. Audrey Freeman followed with 11 points.
Trinity Rainey cashed in 10 points. Chalee Britt tallied nine points, and Shelbe Butner added six points.
The Tigerettes start their season off with a win, moving to 1-0 overall.
The Tiger men would score four early points against Harrisburg, but the Bulldog three-storm started after that.
Harrisburg scored 11 unanswered points, nine by the three-pointer. The Tigers would claw back into it, and trailed by three after a quarter, 18-15.
The Bulldogs got rolling again in the second quarter, as they outscored Macon 17-12 to take a 35-27 halftime lead.
The Tigers again would get close to the Bulldogs, but Harrisburg would hit their shots to stifle the rally. Macon did outscore the Bulldogs 17-14 in the third to get within 49-44.
In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs would benefit from Tiger fouls, and hit their free-throws to keep Macon at arms-length.
Harrisburg would outscore Macon 12-10 in the final frame, and send the Tigers to a season-opening loss with a 61-54 victory.
Tyrone Walker led the Tigers with 19 points. Trey Kothe followed with 12 points and six rebounds.
Kendall Kothe would have a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Craig Smith would cash in seven points, including a couple of deep threes.
Brendan Watts tallied three points and seven boards, and Josh Turner added three points.
The Tigers open their season with a mark of 0-1.
Macon will play a JV-varsity triple-header against Salisbury next Tuesday at 5 p.m.
