  • Although everyone welcomed the rain Friday, it made for troublesome football conditions.
The Macon Tigers looked to make it three straight wins over their archrivals, the South Shelby Cardinals, last Friday night in Shelbina.
The rain was falling most of the day, but seemed to lighten up some prior to kickoff. But, after the National Anthem played, the wind and rain returned.
The Tigers would get close to points on their first drive, but the stout Cardinal defense would force a turnover on downs near the redzone.
Macon's defense was up to the task as well, as they forced a punt from South on its first possession. The first quarter would end in a 0-0 tie.
The Tiger "D" had the Cardinals backed into a corner a few minutes later, and forced another punt, but senior kicker Wes Mefford had other plans.
He would turn a bad snap into a 16-yard run to keep the Cardinal drive alive.
A short time later, South Shelby had driven to the Macon 8-yard line, and Mefford would do some running, as he punched through for the games first points. He would also get the 2-point conversion on a backwards pass from QB David Heathman to make the halftime score 8-0, South Shelby in the lead.
The score would remain that until the final play of the game. On fourth down, Macon QB Craig Smith would loft a pass, which was picked off by, who else, Wes Mefford, who ran in for a touchdown as time expired to give South a 14-0 win.
South Shelby improves to 2-0 overall (2-0 CCC) and will play in Palmyra Friday night.
The Tigers fall to 1-1 overall (1-1 CCC) and will look for their first home victory Friday evening when they play host to the Monroe City Panthers.
