The AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) will observe their National Day of Service on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
To mark the event, the Long Branch Area AARP Chapter #5450 members will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Macon County Ministries Emergency Food Pantry from Sept. 1 through Sept. 10.
Dropoff locations have been set up at at the following local businesses: Dollar General, University of Missouri Extension Office, Loch Haven, Macon Chronicle-Herald, Macon Elks Lodge (Bingo night Sept. 9), H&R Block, Literacy Center and The Home Press.
The drive is scheduled to begin on Sept. 1, but some of the collection locations may open sooner.
Locations will have a collection bag or box and posters on display showing "Long Branch Area AARP #5450 Food Drive.
AARP spokesperson Betty Fitzgerald said that the Emergency Food Pantry is extremely low in all staples.
Items needed are:
Saltine crackers, peanut butter, jelly, Hamburger Helper, canned meat & fish, fruit juice, canned vegetables, canned potatoes, canned sweet potatoes, cereal, cake mixes, muffin mixes, pancake mixes, canned soups, paper towels, toilet tissue, hand soap.
"Let's all get together and show our friends and neighbors in need that we care," said Fitzgerald.
